Getting married - What you need to know
Congratulations on deciding to marry. As well as a wonderful celebration of love, getting married is a legal process. Here are the legal requirements:
- You must both be over the age of 18 years
- Necessary forms to be completed
- It is my role as your celebrant to make the documentation as easy as possible.
Before the wedding ceremony
Notice of Intended Marriage form
The Notice of Intended Marriage form needs to be completed and signed and lodged with me, one month and one day prior to the wedding.
You can download the NOIM form as a PDF.
Documentation for sighting
You will need to show me the following original documents:
- Birth Certificates
- If divorced before 2002 a Decree Absolute if after 2002 a Certificate of Divorce.
- Foreign Passport if born overseas
- If a widow or widower a death certificate
- Form 14 Declaration
After the wedding ceremony
- Certificate of Marriage [Form 15]
- Certificate of Marriage [Form 16]
- Marriage Register
All three certificates are signed by the bride, groom, and two witnesses both over the age of 18 who can both read and speak English. This happens on your wedding day, towards the end of your ceremony.
As an experienced, authorised celebrant, I will guide you through every step and make sure all the documentation is correctly completed and logded. If you have any queries regarding the legal process of getting married, please do not hesitate to contact me.
